The success of every Scouting program depends on having well-trained leaders. They not only bring a quality program to their units, but they have more fun doing it. Everything we do in Scouting has a purpose. Training is the key to recognizing, understanding and achieving the purpose behind each activity.
The BSA has a great deal of formal training available to help develop leaders, and has established minimum standards for leaders to be recognized as Trained for their position. The requirements for troop leaders are as follows:
- Complete Youth Protection Training. This course is available online at the BSA Online Learning Center. The course must be taken every two years.
- Complete Fast Start Training for your position (also available online at the BSA Online Learning Center):
- Tiger Leader training for Tiger Cub Den Leaders
- Cub Leader training for Wolf and Bear Den Leaders
- Webelos Leader training for Webelos Den Leaders
- Cubmaster training for Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmasters
- Pack Committee training for committee members and chartered orgaization representative
- Complete the This is Scouting course. This is available online at the BSA Online Learning Center. This course replaces the old New Leader Essentials course (which is still valid if you've already taken it)
- Complete the position-specific course for your position. These courses are also offered periodically at the District Roundtable.
Upon completion of the required courses, you are entitled to wear the Trained patch on your left sleeve below your badge of office.
