Winter Camp, Caspers Wilderness Park, January 29 - 31, 2010

Calling all Scout Families!! Winter Camp Sign-Ups is now officially open!

We have room for 60 campers in Caspers Wilderness Park. The dates are Friday, January 29th through Sunday, January 31st. Participation is first come, first served. Pack 717 will provide food and drinks for Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast. Our campsite will be close to a restroom, a playground area for younger siblings and within walking distance from the hands-on visitor center. Life couldn't be better!

The Pack has reserved "San Juan Meadow Group site A". Mention to the Park Ranger you are with Pack 717 and the campsite name, they will give you a map. You will be charged Parking/Camping Fees at the gate of $5 for the driver and $2 for each additional passenger for each night you stay. The Day Use Fee is $5 per vehicle between the hours of 7am to sunset.

Please email Tammy Horio, Pack 717's outstanding Camping Chair, at tkh0717@yahoo.com the following information no later than January 22nd:

1. Your den #/Cub Scout name, siblings and parents who will be coming.
2. Will you camp Friday and/or Saturday night?
3. Will you just drop-in for Saturdays’ activities (the 5 mile hike around 10am)?
4. Which meals will your family need? Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, lunch, dinner; Sunday breakfast
5. If your den is interested in leading an activity (from your Cub Scout’s Handbook) and which one.
6. If your den is interested in leading an activity (from the Academics or Sports program) and which one.

This is an incredible opportunity for the non-campers to have an outdoor activity during the day. If your den would like to do a hike, or do an outdoor activity, this is a GREAT time and place. It just doesn't get any better than this !!!!

Caspers Wilderness Park is an 8,000 acre protected wilderness preserve nestled among the river terraces and sandstone canyons of the western coastal Santa Ana Mountains. The park's many fertile valleys are overtly complemented by specimen groves of native Coastal Live Oak and magnificent stands of California Sycamore. These areas are further accentuated by seasonal wildflower displays and running streams. Wildlife is abundant and can be readily viewed from any of the parks numerous trails.

The weather is usually great, with temperatures approaching freezing at night and near 70 during the day. It is close to home, so sports commitments can be kept. And don’t forget, meals always taste better outdoors. For your comfort, please bring winter sleeping bags and winter clothes/jackets as it will get cold!!! You can rent winter rated tents and sleeping bags from REI at a very reasonable cost.
